DECARBONIZE
Optimize your investments and decarbonize your buildings
Kolostat turns your decarbonization goals into concrete building-mechanical solutions. Portfolio analysis, recommendations, a detailed delivery schedule, and performance monitoring — an integrated approach that optimizes installation costs, reduces operating costs, and increases building value.

The decarbonization stack
Four moves that compound
Most portfolios don't need a single silver bullet. They need the right sequence — and the engineering discipline to make the capex math work.
Heat pump retrofits
Electrify central heating with cold-climate heat pumps engineered for Quebec winters. Phased rollouts inside occupied buildings, paired with grant-eligible scope.
Waste heat recovery
Capture rejected heat from refrigeration, exhaust, process loops and wastewater. Re-route it to make-up air, domestic hot water, or adjacent buildings on the same site.
Inter-building energy loops
Connect campus assets into a shared low-temperature loop so one building’s reject heat becomes another’s baseload. The cheapest negajoule is the one already in your portfolio.
Controls and M&V
BMS sequences, demand-driven ventilation, and measurement & verification dashboards. We report avoided tCO₂e the way your ESG team needs to disclose it.
Cold-climate engineering
Heat pumps engineered for Quebec winters
Electrification only works if it works in February. We specify and commission cold-climate heat pump platforms with staged back-up sized for resilience — not nostalgia.
- Cold-climate heat pump platforms suited to Quebec design conditions
- Hybrid switchover modelled against the building load profile
- Phased retrofits inside occupied buildings — no tenant downtime
- Refrigerant strategy aligned with HFC phase-down rules
The team behind the projects
The energy and decarbonization division of Kolostat
Our Energy division is the specialist team inside Kolostat that runs the energy work — audit, engineering, grant strategy, commissioning, and measurement. Based in Old Montréal, working across Quebec and Ontario, embedded in the same delivery org that has built mechanical systems for Canadian buildings since 1927.
BOMA Energy Challenge winner — five consecutive years, 2021 through 2025.

The dedicated service pages
Each move in the decarbonization stack has a dedicated engineering page with project details, eligible grants, and contact paths.
Building decarbonization (engineering)
Audit, roadmap, build, and report — the full Energy-division engagement across commercial, institutional, and industrial assets.
Commercial heat pump retrofit
Cold-climate electrification for office, multi-residential, and institutional portfolios. Replace gas baseload with grid-fed thermal capacity.
Waste heat recovery
Recover rejected heat from refrigeration, process, exhaust, and wastewater streams. Re-route it to make-up air, domestic hot water, or adjacent buildings.
Inter-building energy loops
Shared low-temperature loops connecting multiple buildings. Engineered for campuses, mixed-use, and adjacent-asset portfolios.
Grants & financing
Free eligibility assessment across ÉcoPerformance, Énergir, Hydro-Québec, Enbridge. Up to 75% of project cost covered.
HVAC capabilities
The HVAC moves that decarbonize a building
Heat pumps and heat recovery do the heavy lifting; energy loops and controls make the numbers real in service.
Common questions
What our clients ask first
How do you handle electrification in a cold climate like Quebec?
We specify cold-climate heat pump platforms sized for Quebec design conditions, and model the building envelope and dual-fuel switchover carefully. For most retrofits we recommend a staged path — heat pump as primary, with back-up sized for the coldest design hours — so you decarbonize without sacrificing comfort or resilience.
Can heat pumps fully replace our gas boilers, or is hybrid the realistic answer?
For new construction we have delivered net-zero institutional projects — Library and Archives Canada is one example. For retrofits in older Quebec buildings, a hybrid configuration is usually the more cost-effective path, especially once grant stacking is modelled in. We size each option against the building load profile and the available grant envelope.
What emissions reduction can we realistically achieve?
It depends on the asset. On waste-heat-recovery and electrification projects we have delivered up to 80% reductions in GHG emissions on the targeted scope. We deliver the energy modelling and savings calculation as part of the engagement, so the number you report is sourced from the building, not an estimate.
Does ÉcoPerformance fund decarbonization projects specifically?
Yes. ÉcoPerformance reimburses up to 75% of eligible project costs when the work demonstrably reduces GHG emissions from fossil-fuel combustion or fugitive releases. Heat pump conversions, heat recovery, and energy-loop projects are core eligible categories. We prepare the technical and financial filings as part of the engagement.
How do you measure and report avoided emissions back to our ESG team?
We instrument the buildings during commissioning and deliver energy accounting tools and interactive dashboards that report energy use, savings against the baseline, and avoided tCO₂e on an ongoing basis. The output is structured so your ESG team can fold it directly into their reporting workflows.
Does Kolostat work with the Canada Green Building Council?
Yes. Kolostat is involved with the Canada Green Building Council, and many of our customer projects have obtained LEED certification — including Bell Canada head office (Nun’s Island) and the Altoria / Aimia Tower in Montréal. We coordinate the mechanical evidence package with the certification body, energy modeller and architect of record.
