At Kolostat, we thrive on delivering innovative solutions for complex projects. Our recent collaboration with Equans, the operating partner for Library & Archives Canada (LAC) in this PPP project led by PCL Construction, is a prime example of this commitment. This project, designed to create a state-of-the-art archival facility, not only met but exceeded expectations, earning a prestigious LEED Gold Certification.
Preserving Canada’s History
Library & Archives Canada embarked on an ambitious mission: to build a facility capable of storing 21,500 cubic meters of archival materials, ensuring their preservation for the next 500 years. This required a highly specialized environment with stringent temperature and humidity controls. Five of the vaults needed to maintain 10 degrees Celsius and 40% relative humidity, while the sixth vault required 6 degrees Celsius and 30% relative humidity.
Innovative Solutions for Complex Challenges
As a design-build contractor and an Automated Logic Corporation (ALC) dealer in Quebec for the past 20 years, Kolostat was uniquely positioned to meet these rigorous requirements. Our team, led by Senior VP Daniel Robert and Senior Project Manager Stéphane Maccabée, leveraged cutting-edge technology to achieve the precise environmental conditions necessary for the preservation of Canada’s invaluable archival materials.
Seamless Integration with Web Control
One of the standout features of this project was the implementation of the Automated Logic Control System. This advanced system allowed us to integrate a matrix of temperature and humidity readings into the controllers, enabling real-time decision-making to maintain the critical conditions within the facility. As Robert Gobert, our programmer, highlighted, the system’s ability to manage the chiller, air handler, and boiler operations was crucial in achieving the desired outcomes.
A Partnership for the Long Haul
Our collaboration with Equans, the facility manager responsible for overseeing the building until 2052, has been instrumental in the project’s success. Equans Facility Manager Genevieve Horlings emphasized the importance of Kolostat’s role during the commissioning phase, ensuring that the facility operated as designed. The Web Control system has also empowered Equans to monitor energy consumption, water usage, and ambient conditions, providing a comprehensive overview of the facility’s performance.
Pride in Our Accomplishments
We are incredibly proud of our team’s dedication and the successful realization of this unique project. As Daniel Robert expressed, the team’s execution in the completion of this project was a significant achievement for Kolostat, and we are honored to have contributed to preserving Canada’s history for future generations.
